Dev Admits On Steam That Game “Sucks”, Decides To Rework

It takes a lot to admit you got something wrong; whether that’s an apology to a friend, or a public announcement on a huge digital distribution service. Either way, it’s refreshing to see someone confess to wrongdoings not only openly, but without any sugarcoating or beating around the bush.

The developer of 2020’s Survival MMO Last Oasis is in the latter of the two camps. On Steam, developer chadz wrote an article titled “Last Oasis Sucks.” You’d be forgiven for thinking this is a scathing review from a fan, but no, it’s the actual developer of Last Oasis.

Check out some gameplay from another MMO, the recent Diablo Immortal.

Last Oasis is a nomadic survival game developed and published by Donkey Crew, and released on Steam on March 26th 2020. The setting is an interesting concept. The site’s wiki says; “the Earth has stopped rotating and the survivors must be constantly on the move to keep within the habitable zone between the cold dark and the sun’s scorching heat.”

It’s a cool (pun intended) idea, and there’s a lot of potential for a nifty gameplay loop. Steam reviews have remained “mixed” since its release, however, and now the devs seem to be following suit.

Chadz said, in the article, that “When I say it sucks, I mean I’m not having fun for long when playing it. Not as long as other survival games I enjoy.” It’s a bold statement, especially about your own intellectual property. It not only shows honesty, but a clear awareness of what works and what doesn’t. It must be helpful to be able to look at your own work with objective eyes, and know when things aren’t right.

We look forward to seeing what the devs will do with Last Oasis in the future. Fingers-crossed for a rebirth like Final Fantasy XIV‘s.
