It’s Time To Hear About What’s Being Content Vaulted With Destiny 2: Lightfall

We are now under 50 days away from the release of Lightfall, and I’m sure there’s about to be a full court press of information released relating to the upcoming expansion and subsequent season. But that’s the good news, and at some point, I’m going to need Bungie to hit me with the bad news.

Bungie has said one thing very specifically, they are not vaulting any more expansions going forward. This is after they vaulted all Destiny 2 vanilla campaign content, two full DLCs and the campaign of the Forsaken expansion. They said they want people to be able to play the “Light and Darkness” saga, which they believe starts with the Shadowkeep campaign, in full.

So, that takes some things off the board. You cannot have the Shadowkeep campaign without the moon. You cannot have the Beyond Light campaign without Europa. You cannot have the Witch Queen campaign without the Throne World. The Dreaming City was deliberately saved from destruction when Forsaken was vaulted. But that leaves a number of open questions that I think Bungie needs to answer soon. Because they have not said that nothing is being vaulted from here, namely seasonal content is still going away. But are there any exceptions? Things I want to know:

  • Will either/both PsiOps Battlegrounds or Heist Battlegrounds be saved and added to the Vanguard playlist, similar to what happened with Chosen Battlegrounds last year?
  • Is year 5’s best mission, Operation Seraph’s Shield, which only appeared a few weeks ago, actually being deleted in another month and a half, or is there any chance to save it? (and what happens to the dog?)
  • Are there any large-scale zone deletions coming this time, with the main vulnerable areas seeming to be the EDZ, Nessus or the Cosmodrome?
  • Will any more Crucible maps be vaulted? I cannot imagine Gambit maps will be, given that we’re down to just four already.

What I hope the future plan is that Bungie will reduce content vault to only seasonal content going forward, but at the same time saving things within that which can be saved, like Battlegrounds to put in the playlist or especially good exotic missions. I maintain a priority should be for Bungie to figure out a way to put past exotic missions like Whisper, Zero Hour and Presage back in the Legends tab somehow, as it’s wild to produce content that good and have it just be…unplayable, forever, in order to save space. You quite literally cannot play the best missions in Destiny history right now, and that’s absurd.

Bungie itself does seem to understand how much the community hates content vaulting, so they are trying to balance the technical need to do so with keeping what they can and not cutting as deep as they used to. I think the community can agree to make some compromises. As goofy as it is to vault Leviathan, bring Leviathan back as Derelict Leviathan, and then vault it again, I at least understand it’s not serving much of a purpose and if you have to cut something, I get it. But I do hope we at least stop this culling of old major content and zones, and start to see things returned out of the content vault. We just got a pretty decently big chunk of Mars back with Season of the Seraph. Rather than vaulting that bit again, I’d love to see the entire thing return, including its old strikes. That shouldn’t feel like the pipe dream it potentially is, under this current system.

My guess is content vaulting will be one of the last things we hear about before Lightfall, but I think it might be better to start confirming what’s staying and going now.
